The river deity, Master Ba Ye, and his apprentice Yue'er are invited by villager Qiu Sheng to help exorcise evil spirits afflicting his sister. As Master Ba Ye arrives, the hidden truths behind the deaths at Wuming River slowly come to light. It turns out that the wealthy local nobleman, Qian Jinming, is deeply entangled in the events.
